FUN SPRING ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR KIDS AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY!
Spring is here and whether you are in quarantine in your home during this COVID-19 epidemic or enjoying some Spring weather outside, here are some fun things you can do this season.
Spring is all about NEW! New flowers, new leaves, new baby animals, new landscape. It is the perfect time to learn new things about nature and also make new memories for your children. Spring is a fun season for sure. Let’s get to having some Spring fun with our kids.
1. DO A SPRING SCAVENGER HUNT
I just added a brand new Spring Scavenger hunt in our RESOURCE LIBRARY. This fun Spring activity is perfect for children of any age. You can do this in your neighborhood, your backyard, or even on a nature trail or a camping trip. Take it with you on your next outing to make it more fun.

2. FIND DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOWERS ON YOUR HIKE AND IDENTIFY THEM
This is a fun spring activity you can do with your kiddos. While on your hike or nature walk you can have your child pick flowers or take pictures of flowers that they find on the trail. They can press the flowers in their nature journals to then identify when they get home. You can also use a quick print camera and stick the photos in the nature journals. We like using the Canon Ivy Cliq Camera for our kids travel journal.
To identify the flowers we like to use the book, Nature Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of the Natural World by: Julia Rothman. It is by far one of our favorite because it covers many parts of the outdoor world and it is very easy to comprehend and for my girls to use.
3. LEARN ABOUT THE LIFE CYCLE OF A FLOWER
When identifying the different flowers your kids have found, you can also take this time to teach them about the life cycle of the flower. One fun way to do this is by taking them to a local nursery or a garden center in a nearby store and letting them pick out a small pot, some acrylic paints and the flower seeds that they want. Let them paint the pot, fill it up with rocks in the bottom and the rest with soil and plant the seed. You can teach them how to carefully water and care for it. Every day you can have them make observations in their nature journal of what they see in the plant as it grows.
4. PLANT A VEGETABLE GARDEN OR A FLOWER GARDEN
Spring is the perfect time to grow a vegetable or even a flower garden. We like to plant vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, peas, peppers, potatoes, and even lettuce in our backyard.
We also take this season to redo our front gardens. The girls and I usually go to the Home Depot by our home and buy some Marigolds and other flowers to plant around our window. We will pull out the weeds in the flower beds, remove any big rocks we may find, then dig the holes to plant our new flowers. Isabelle loves digging the holes because she loves to play with the rollie pollies.
5. GO ON A SPRING CAMPING TRIP
Spring is the best time to go camping. It is not too hot and not too cold. The weather is just right! You can take this time to do another fun spring activity while sitting around the campfire. You can have your child spot different things you can find during the Spring season such as a nest, little birds, new buds on the trees, wildflowers and much more. The scavenger hunt linked below is perfect for this. You can even take this time to play Camp Charades. This game can be so fun.

6. GO ON A SPRING HIKING TRIP
Hiking trips are also fun for the family for the same reasons. The weather is perfect, besides the rain. Fall and Spring are definitely my favorite times of the year to be outdoors. We love to use our Spring Scavenger Hunt when we are hiking as well. We usually take easy hikes around Tennessee when we are home unless we are traveling then we will scope out some other fun hiking trips.

7. GO PUDDLE JUMPING
April showers brings May flowers! I am not sure about where you are at but here in Tennessee it has been raining almost every single day since the beginning of March. This is the perfect time to put on those rain boots and go puddle jumping after the rain has stopped. My youngest daughter Isa absolutely loves jumping in the puddles. She wouldn’t care what shoes she has on. If she sees a puddle she will immediately go jump in it. She just can’t resist herself.
8. LEARN ABOUT THE WATER CYCLE, THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLOUDS AND FIND THEM IN THE SKY
This is definitely one of our favorite activities to do during the Spring. The rainy season is perfect for learning how the water cycle works in our environment. On a less rainy day you can go outside and learn about the different types of clouds. You can even make it fun by finding funny objects in the clouds like a dog or a unicorn. It is crazy to see how creative our kids minds are when they are looking for things in the clouds.
What is the craziest thing your child has “seen” in the sky?
9. PLAY NATURE BINGO
This is another fun nature activity to do with your kiddos. It is perfect for any outdoor outing. Whether you are hiking, camping, or just at a local park or even your backyard, this bingo game is very fun to do. You can find this in our RESOURCE LIBRARY.
10. HAVE A PICNIC AT A PARK AND READ SPRING BOOKS OUTSIDE
We love to have a picnic. I will get the girls in the kitchen to help me make sandwiches and pack up our bag. Afterwards we head out to a local park or even our backyard to enjoy eating outside. We will bring our homeschool books out or even some fun Spring reading books to read after we eat. We use our Nature Inspired Reading Log Punch Cards to keep us motivated to read more books each week or month (depending on our schedule).
Here are some fun Spring reading books:
- Hedgehugs
- The Berenstain Bears Spring Storybook Favorites
- Home for a Bunny
- We are the Gardeners
- Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt
- Worm Weather
- Planting a Rainbow

11. CREATE AN OUTDOOR JOURNAL
I quickly talked earlier about using a nature journal on our nature walks or even outdoor trips. Spring is the perfect time to start one. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You can let them buy a journal that they can decorate such as this journal notebook. It is perfect for them to be creative. We however, like to use the Journal for Travel Lovers because my girls love the beach. They will write in them and create sketches of things they saw during their trip. We also use the Canon Ivy Cliq Camera to take pictures of special moments during their trip that they want to remember and treasure in their journal. You can find more fun journaling items in our Amazon Storefront here as well.
12. PLAY IN THE RAIN IN YOUR RAINCOAT AND RAIN BOOTS
I know I mentioned puddle jumping before but if it is not storming and cold, playing in the rain is also fun. Just grab your raincoat and rain boots and go playing in the rain. I remember growing up, I used to play in the rain all the time with my little brothers when it wasn’t storming and it was probably some of the most fun I had during my childhood.
13. MAKE FLOWER SHAPED COOKIES AND DECORATE THEM TO TAKE WITH YOU ON YOUR PICNIC
Planning to do a picnic? Don’t forget to bring a treat. Something fun you can do is make some sugar cookies in the shape of flowers and decorate them for your picnic. This is the perfect time to review some math. I will have my oldest daughter Bella (currently in second grade) review her measurements. I will pull out all of our measuring cups and spoons and have her measure out the ingredients. It is definitely a fun way to review some simple math.
14. DO NATURE ARTS AND CRAFTS
Arts and crafts is definitely something fun to do. One fun Spring activity that you can do with your kids is making new and crafty things.
BIRD HOUSES
One thing that we did this Spring (well very early spring, still winter) was bird houses. My husband bought a bird house kit similar to this one and we put it together and then let them paint them. Now the bird houses are ready to be hung up outside.
BIRD FEEDERS
Another fun craft you can do is make bird feeders with pine cones. You can take some pine cones, put peanut butter all over them, add some bird seeds and hang them up outside for the birds.
One other way that you can make bird feeders is using a stick. Just butter it up with some peanut butter and some seeds and hang them up. You can also use other items like a toilet paper roll, a dish with just seeds, you name it.
NATURE MOBILE
This is another fun Spring activity. You can make a nature mobile with your kids. Just find a long stick and some fun nature finds. Attach the nature finds with a string to the stick and then add a longer string to the stick for hanging. Just tie the string on each end of the stick to get a good balance on it. You can then hang it up in their room or even display it in your living room.
PAINT CERAMIC POTS
I mentioned this one briefly earlier but I wanted to mention it again very quickly. This Spring we painted ceramic pots and we had so much fun painting them. I loved seeing how creative they were making their pots look beautiful. From mixing colors, to painting flowers, and even adding a splash of glitter and Glow in the Dark paint. Definitely one that we really enjoyed.
Here is what you need:
- Acrylic Paint
- Ceramic Terra Pots
- Cardboard to avoid messes
- Paint Brushes
- A cup of water to clean your brushes
- A rag to clean up any messes
- An art apron to avoid paint from getting on their clothes
15. PAINT / DRAW WHAT YOU FIND IN NATURE
There are so many fun Spring activities you can do but here is the last one for this list. You can buy a sketchbook for your child and have them sketch and even paint a scenery or something that caught their eye outside. It can be something they saw outside their window like a bird or even from your day at the park or your hiking trip. Let this sketchbook be their space for creativity.
Things to use include:
CONCLUSION
I can keep on going and going on this post on fun things to do but these 15 are definitely at the top of our lists. Spring is one of our favorite seasons of the year so I am always trying to use this season to educate them as well as making it fun for them. From outdoor trips, arts and crafts, to even fun scavenger hunts. I am sure there is something fun for you and your family to do.
What are some fun Spring activities that you and your kids enjoying doing together? or that even you enjoyed doing as a kid? Let me know in the comments. I would love to see what other fun things everyone else does.
